People do most of their shopping in supermarkets and hypermarkets, which have a wide range of products, like ready-made meals, frozen vegetables, dairy products, cheeses, etc. The cheapest supermarkets tend to be located on the outskirts of towns.
There are also many quality small shops that tend to be open until quite late at night, these include: pork butchers’ (charcuteries), bakeries/cake-shops (boulangeries/pâtisseries), delicatessens (traiteurs) and small local grocery shops (épiceries)
Opening hours:
Supermarkets and hypermarkets are open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00 (sometimes later).*During December are open all Sunday!
Speciality shops (bakeries, butchers’ shops, etc.) are usually open six days a week from 09:00 (sometimes much earlier for bakeries) to 19:00 or 20:00. Some open on Sundays, in which case they are closed one day during the week. Sometimes these shops close for a part of the afternoon.
Some small grocery shops in large towns are open seven days a week from 09:00 to 22:00 or 23:00, sometimes even midnight.
Fresh produce markets are usually only held one or two days a week in a particular quarter, from 08:00 to 13:00.
