EATING

EATING HABITS

French people usually eat three meals a day: Breakfast when they get up, lunch at around 12:00 or 13:00, dinner at around 20:00. Breakfast is often very quick and typically consists of a hot drink (coffee, tea or hot chocolate) and baguette or a croissant with butter or jam. Lunch and dinner usually consist of a starter, a hot main course (meat or fish with vegetables), then cheese and dessert (fruit, pastry, ice-cream, etc.)

As for drinks, the French are big consumers of bottled water, even though tap water in all parts of the country is perfectly drinkable. And, although France is a wine-growing country, fewer and fewer French people are regular wine drinkers.

US-style food (hamburgers, ketchup, soft drinks, etc.) is making inroads, especially with younger people. Luckily, though, French culinary tradition is still rich and varied: every region of France has its own special dish, cheese (there are as many varieties of cheese in France as there are days in the year) and wine.

EATING OUT

Fast food - At cafés and brasseries, you can eat sandwiches, toasted cheese sandwiches (croque-monsieur) and quiches for around 3 Euros each. Coffee (short black) costs around 1.50 Euros.
Many bakeries and delicatessens also sell sandwiches (prices range from 3 Euros to 4 Euros) and take-away drinks.

More and more fast-food restaurants are being opened by American and French chains. A meal at McDonald’s costs between 6.00 and 7.00 Euros.
Traditional restaurants - Alongside typical French food, which covers basic steak and chips, country fare, and gourmet cuisine, you can sample all the cuisines in the world in France. The most common international restaurants are Asian and Italian, followed by Indian and Mexican. Vegetarian restaurants are still relatively rare, but becoming more popular.

You can order either “au menu” (fixed menu comprising a hot main course, a starter and/or cheese or dessert and sometimes a drink) or “à la carte” (where you select the dishes you want, perhaps just a main course if you prefer). In small local restaurants, you can find fixed menus for under 7.00 Euros In standard restaurants, you can eat for around 18.50 Euros a head. Prices at gourmet restaurants (restaurants gastronomiques) are considerably higher.
