SESOM is a division of the Saint-Etienne Chamber of Commerce (CCI). The role of the CCI is to promote local business by providing the necessary infrastructures in terms of both transport and education. SESOM and its students therefore have close links with the local economy. CCI are governed by the Ministry of Economy.
Their main tasks are :

The CCIs offer support to entrepreneurs and companies, in all the phases of their existence, from the design of the project by the creator to assistance in solving difficulties.
As representatives of the companies, they express their opinion on all areas of economic development in their administrative area to the public authorities.
to observe and keep a close watch on the economy
CCIs are constantly reinforcing their knowledge of the economic base (companies and administrative areas).

The financing of chambers of commerce and industry is based on
- a compulsory trade tax paid by the companies of their region.
- specific taxes for training (apprenticeship tax) ;
- resources from the management of Business schools, ports, airports, etc.
