Education
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in French and English at Baylor University in 1972, her Master of Arts in Modern Languages at the University of Tennessee in 1974, and her Ph.D. in Modern Languages at Duke University in 1984.
Experience
Betty Beeler was born in Sevierville, Tennessee, on November 1, 1950 and lived in Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Chicago, Germany, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso before moving to France in 1983. From 1974 to 1977, Dr. Beeler taught English at the University of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso as a member of the Peace Corps. It was at this time that she developed a keen interest in intercultural understanding, which she has incorporated in her teaching and research.
For the past twenty-two years, Dr. Beeler has taught English communication for scientific or business purposes in universities and écoles in Saint-Etienne : Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Saint-Etienne, Université Jean-Monnet, Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne, and the Ecole Nationale des Ingénieurs de Saint-Etienne.
In 1992, she obtained tenure at the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce, or Saint-Etienne School of Management. In addition to teaching and setting up English lessons in area companies, she was in charge of the Language Department for three years, and has been in charge of International Relations for the past five years. Since 2001, she has also overseen the MBA program in E-Management that is co-produced with the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and has coordinated the network of business schools called the Alliance for the Promotion of Cross-Cultural Skills for Business Students, that grew out of funding by the FIPSE office in Washington and the Directorate General for Education and Culture in Brussels.
Dr. Beeler’s current research focus is on the role of intercultural skills in the success of international alliances, clusters and poles of competitively.
